Management of Pain & Inflammation

Welfare Concepts are developing a innovative approaches to the managment of pain and inflammation

The consumer-driven demand for high standards of animal wellbeing are leading to a growth in the market for analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Pain relief is no longer considered a luxury but a fundamental aspect of modern animal husbandry and farmers and veterinarians are now integrating pain management as a routine part of caring for animals undergoing painful procedures or suffering from diseases.
This shift in perspective is highlighting the shortcomings in products which were developed decades ago and there is an increasing demand for innovation which will lead to improved analgesic and anti-inflammatory treatment solutions.

Among the most pressing welfare issues in dairy cattle is lameness, which stems from injuries or diseases affecting the foot or leg. Lameness not only compromises the well-being of cows but also leads to significant economic losses, ranking as the third most critical cause of financial impact behind reproduction issues and mastitis. Long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) offer a potential solution, providing benefits to both farmers and their cattle.
Another critical area of focus is postpartum systemic inflammation. If left unmanaged, this condition can adversely affect milk production, increase the risk of metabolic diseases, and heighten the likelihood of mastitis and lameness.

Conventional injectable anti-inflammatory products require daily administration (e.g., ketoprofen) for up to three days or offer marginally longer-lasting action (e.g., meloxicam) with 48-72 hours of pain relief and, some treatments require extended meat and milk withdrawal periods, complicating farm management.

Our innovative solutions aim to address these limitations by providing effective, long-lasting pain relief without disrupting farm operations. By advancing the field of analgesics and anti-inflammatories, we are committed to enhancing animal welfare and supporting farmers in managing the health and productivity of their herds.
